I'm sorry I have neglected you. A lot has happened though. My father passed away in February. My daughters molestation case is still in court after 2 years now. We lost our home (moved in with mom). And I kind of had a mid-life crisis/identity crisis right before dad died and quit my job. Mostly due to being pushed in directions I didn't sign on for, and feeling the rug being pulled out from under my feet. School continued to suffer. I passed fall semester...only barely. I had to repeat those classes in spring, but after dads passing....yeah, its ridiculous. I honestly don't know how the school puts up with me. We're pretty much losing everything. Our van is next on the chopping block. $18,000 later, and $4,000 shy and it is likely to be repossessed....am I FURIOUS? It's a $12,000 (maybe $14,000) 2003 Chevy Venture van. Yes, 22 grand on a 12 grand car. That is bondage. I keep corporate America and the government going because I get to pay penalty fees. Like Forever.

Shame on me for "boo hooing" on my art blog, but I just haven't had the time because of the boo hooing. If all of you could be kind enough, until I migrate here to this blog (possibly...for consistency sake) please keep up to date with my postponed posts at: http://artbyshaunwilliams.blogspot.com/ for now. It has some recent posts too. Like my fathers portrait that I did for my sister, and a patriotic float mural I did for some friends, and some new web designs....and a really long post about the in's and out's of my site.

Thank you all for you support and interest.

Till later when all of this mess gets under control....take care.

Limited Pallete

These are the first two paintings completed for school this fall semester at the Academy of Art University which I am attending online. The only colors used in these assignments are a 4 color limited pallet of: Ivory Black, Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, and Terra Rosa. The canvases are 12x16 and I primarily used a 1/4 inch flat brush. Life is busy. School, web design and graphic design work, fine art painting, family, and the occasional social visit. Enjoy.

Trying a New Look

Today I watched Kung Fu Panda. While watching the ending credits, which are amazing by the way, I wondered about the dark Kanji and Chinese characters on the warm backgrounds. And I thought I would try my Signature in the same style. So, here it is. Not bad. A little bare for design...but I don't know actual brushwork, nor the language of the Chinese. And I don't want to have this look too silly. This way captures my original design for my Signature, Which was originally meant to have somewhat of a brushstroke dynamic to it.

Also, lately I have been feeling like my light against dark designs for my signature and my websites...needs to have a break. This Dark against light theme....might be a direction to go. Hm, I wonder. :) Enjoy.

P.S. I had to change the 's' on Williams...the curve was backwards. Oops. My wife caught it. Today in church, one of the speakers (who amazingly also teaches my son in first grade) quoted the words below.

'Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
Thought it scarcely worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin,
But held it up with a smile: "What am I bidden, good folks," he cried,
"Who'll start the bidding for me?"
"A dollar, a dollar"; then, "Two!" "Only two?
Two dollars, and who'll make it three?
Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice;
Going for three—" But no,
From the room, far back, a gray-haired man
Came forward and picked up the bow;
Then, wiping the dust from the old violin,
And tightening the loose strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet
As a caroling angel sings.
The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said, "What am I bid for the old violin?"
And he held it up with the bow.
"A thousand dollars, and who'll make it two?
Two thousand! And who'll make it three?
Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice,
And going, and gone!" said he.
The people cheered, but some of them cried,
"We do not quite understand
What changed its worth." Swift came the reply:
"The touch of a master's hand."
And many a man with life out of tune,
And battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd,
Much like the old violin.
A "mess of pottage," a glass of wine,
A game—and he travels on.
He's "going" once, and "going" twice,
He's "going" and almost "gone."
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd
Never can quite understand
The worth of a soul and the change that's wrought
By the touch of the Master's hand.

What more can I say? As an artist, I think of how my skill is like an old violin sometimes...and I wonder what my artistic ability is worth. I ponder my worth on more personal levels too...and wonder if I have too often heeded the thoughtless crowd. How important it is to learn of our worth as the Master knows it, and to never auction ourselves cheap...though battered, scarred, covered in dust, and out of tune, how great our worth in the Masters hands!
May we all look to Him...and let all other opinions wash away...even if necessary, our own. Happy Sabbath.

(Quoted from talk given by Pres. I used to do this more often to stay awake. But that was more due to my late nights doing art and then getting up early for church than anything else. Now that I have 4 children, my wife and I have our hands full, so I do not get to doodle much any more. lol.

Well, I hope this is beginning to make for a more devoted sketch blog. I hope to get many more of these. I actually do a lot of this. I still need to scan in old ones and put them up too. I simply ended up waiting in the chairs at the Bank to meet someone who was finishing up with a previous customer. I was feeling very "landscape-fine art-ish" at the time and so they are simple landscapes. I often get pinched between wanting to paint something like this, and making money doing something I know how to make money with. But the day will come when they are one and the same.....right? :) These were done in the blue BIC pen style. Since I found my pen stashed in the visor of my van I can do these again. I have micron pens too, but felt tips don't do the same for me as much as the simple BIC ball point pen. He offered to pay for it, and when I told him he could, he chose my old Wizard of OZ painting. He had it printed, bought a frame and hung it in his sons room. After that...and this cracks me up...he realized that his son had never seen "The Wizard Of OZ". So, he had his son watch it soon afterwards. Now my artwork can really be appreciated. :D We have great friends, my wife and I. I also have a 2 mp camera on my cell phone too. These photos were some of those I took with my phone going down the road. I really like clouds, so if there is a question about these, I like clouds. I think about painting large paintings of clouds...if I had the time, or if that could make me money. Anyway, I hope my amateur photography will be accepted here. :D Take care everyone!

More of an Introduction

This is of course the banner image I just put together to show off the Blog. I incorporated the diagonal linear background into an old image of mine that I still use often. There is my "sci-fi" signature as I call it, and then BRUSHDRAGON because that is the name I chose several years back to identify myself. I chose the name because first of all, shaunwilliamsillustration was a lot to type out for a website. I migrated from that address to the much simpler 'brush' and 'dragon'. Two old words that are easy to spell, pronounce, and which I identify with in my work to a degree. Not only that, but 'Shaun' has like 5 spellings, and 'illustration' just pretzels my fingers. :D lol. I like to paint fantasy, so brushdragon fit I thought. Now there are some out there who feel it is a bit dark. Well, dragons are mostly associated with evil in western cultures. Eastern cultures not as much though. At any rate, I hope none of you feel that I chose the name to imply some 'Evil' intent or direction. Above all those concerns, I am a Christian. So, for me I hope to do art which will influence for good. Lately I have been really wanting to paint big paintings of clouds....Yes I said clouds. A fellow BYU-IDAHO Alumni Josh Clare already does an outstanding job of cloud paintings. Check his work out here: http://www.joshclare.com/ to see what I mean. :) Another Alumni Albin Vaselka has good work with some clouds in his landscapes: http://albinveselka.com/. I'll have many other links to old buddies websites soon. I have tastes ranging from still life, figures, portraiture, landscapes, architecture, then conceptual design which has all of my sci-fi and fantasy, and all the illustration and fine art in that arena, as well as a taste I have for sculpture...if I ever get back to that. :) I use Photoshop heavily, but I would prefer to paint with oils more often. For now, I am set on working on website design. I work with a group of programmers. I make things look pretty as they say, and they make what I create actually work. It is a cool partnership I enjoy.

Well, Too much text and not enough art. LOL, I will start scanning in and presenting sketches and art along the way. I have other doodles I have done too. Feel free to check out http://artbyshaunwilliams.blogspot.com/ for all of the old stuff, but remember, I have a lot of "That's life and it sucks" entries along the way there. Hopefully here I can keep this enjoyable and grow until I get my website http://www.brushdragon.com/ recreated into a more dynamic website. It works fine, but takes a while to load. I have about 250 images there. All old images from 3 to 10+ years ago. OK, I'm done. Till the next post! Take care everyone.

For My Artwork

I decided that I need a Blog for my artwork that doesn't include stuff from life. I figure that my hectic life intrudes too much into my art...well, maybe more that I worry that people just want to see my artwork and not hear all of the whining. :D lol. So, I should have this up and going.

Also, this Blog carries the same name as my website. And that makes more sense to me. Thanks to all of you who support me and I hope this can be a real hub of my artwork. I will be adding sketchbook stuff, doodles, and all of the work that has been created but has been hiding from publication on the web. I may...may, add incomplete, or in progress work too. I have more than 10 pieces I have been working on. We'll see.

Have a great time looking through my work. Thanks! :)
